FANGS OF FORTUNE: MY INITIAL THOUGHTS
Well, well, well, the time has finally come!
I have started watching Fangs of Fortune. Well, who isn’t a sucker for the single tear rolling down the cheek.
The Plus Points
The first and foremost thing I
would like to talk about this drama is the amazing set and cinematography. Even
the CGI is top notch. The drama makes it very clear that it is a big production
drama.
The story is also a breath of
fresh air in the world of xinxia dramas with something different to offer.
The character introductions were
also great. Zhao Yuan (played by the actor Neo Hu), the male lead made a striking entrance-mysterious and
enigmatic with an umbrella hiding his face as he is introduced in style. The
female lead Wen Xiao (played by the actress Chen Du Ling) also made a memorable entrance where both the sides of her character were presented- a skilled
demon hunter working with a demon hunting bureau which has seen its downfall
and a woman with compassion who does not believe all demons are evil.
The Negative Aspect
Having said all this, after
completing 5 episodes I must say that despite all the above plus points this
drama was not able to suck me in. I do not care about the characters or their
backstory. I cannot feel the chemistry between the male and the female lead.
The characters besides our two leads also do not interest me.
The story feels all over the
place. The drama is trying to create a mystery about our male lead and the female
lead, but it is quite clear from the get-go that they both knew each other from
the time she was training with the previous Baize goddess or her shifu
(master). This part is intriguing but not intriguing enough for me to propel me
forward through this drama.
They tried adding funny elements
to engage the viewer but honestly, the jokes were not quite landing as opposed
to Love Game in The Eastern Fantasy where the first part had me peeing in my
pants laughing.
The actors tried doing this sexy
voice to make them seem all powerful and important which just sounded weird to me.
Overall, though I will try
watching the rest of the episodes this drama was quite the bummer or a
disappointment if we were to talk in proper English. It had many nice things
going for it but was not able to suck me into the show.
